Well, here we are the last few days of first grade! I can't believe it is already the end of the school year. I have enjoyed teaching your child all year, and will miss them greatly. I wish all of you a wonderful and adventurous summer. Please help your child keep a list or a log of what went on, so they will have lots of experiences to choose from, when writing personal narratives at the beginning of second grade. Bob Clingman will also link practice graphic organizers, blank math sheets , and a suggested reading list on the ebytes home page. These will be available soon.
Here are the pictures from the dogfish shark dissection done with two Shorecrest Grads. I appreciate Robby and Daniel coming in to help me. The students loved it!
A quick reminder that Wednesday June 1st is the last day of school, with a noon dismissal.

Splash Day was great fun! The children loved playing the water games out side.
We dissected crabs this week. The students learned about exoskeletons, and how they breathe through their gills. Crabs have 10 legs, and can grow a new one if one is broken off.
Please check out the summer review black lines on line for math. Our suggested summer reading list is also on line with graphic organizers the students are familiar with using. The students have been especially interested in non fiction fact finding texts.
In Math we have worked with elapsed time. They also did this with temperature. The goal is to know where to begin on the clock, and count by fives, from that point, until you have reached the new time. For example: If it is 10:00, what time will it be in 20 minutes. If it is 68 degrees now, what temperature will it be if it becomes 20 degrees warmer.
I will send home the Handwriting Without Tears alphabet and line orientation for the students to refer to, with their writing practice this summer. I encourage them to write about their many different experiences. Reminder: Aquarium Field Trip is Thursday May 26th, please have students wear their Commotion in the Ocean t-shirts with jean shorts. They can also wear them on Tuesday, May 31st for our end of the year party.
Sorry, My blog was done today due to graduation tomorrow and 10 people staying at my house!

Wow, what a show! The students did a great job. I was so proud of them. I hope you enjoyed the ebytes coverage. We have a busy next two and a half weeks. I am assessing like crazy, and working on report cards.
We have Splash Day on Wednesday May 18th. Please send your child to school in an appropriate bathing suit, bring a towel, uniform change of clothes, including underwear, socks and additional shoes if needed. Please apply sunscreen before they come to school, and I will have them reapply at 9:45a.m.
If you have not sent in your Aquarium parent slip, just meet us at the Aquarium at 10:00 next Thursday May 26th.
The unit 9, checking progress is being sent home this week. The students were completely independent. They had to read and follow the directions independently. Reading the directions, and following them caused confusion for many of the students. Please have them practice reading many directions throughout the summer, and then completing the task. Recipes can be great practice.
Please return all Library Books. The students are responsible for the books checked out in their name. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Smay at extention 170.

We are under way practicing on the stage. We loved practicing with all the room, on the big stage, for our dancing. We look forward to having an audience. We will be performing for the L.D. students on Thursday morning and for all of the families on Friday morning.
The students will be checked reading all 40 ocean words next week. This week we are studying sharks.
In Math, we are reviewing for the remainder of the year. This week our focus is comparing fraction parts. It is confusing, because the larger the denominator, the smaller the piece. We are also following directions on how many parts to shade in.
Look for your invitation to Commotion in the Ocean today!
